The Granton Nature Map is a project set up by Tamsin Grainger and Royston Wardieburn Community Centre in August 2026. It is funded by The Community Grant Fund, the Scotmid Foundation, and Royston Wardieburn Community Centre.
This is a multi-cultural, inclusive project that aims to stitch / embroider a map of Granton (Edinburgh) that features wildlife from participants’ country of origin and the local area.

Using walking and textile arts, the aim is to foster empathy and tolerance between members of the local community. This participatory project will offer a forum for learning skills, and exchanging stories and expertise. It will include visits to the Granton Art Centre and the Palestine Museum to look at other stitched work for inspiration. Also, walking in Granton to observe the wildlife, and stitching around the table together.
The project will involve the sharing of national, natural emblems (Poland – poppy, Ukraine – sunflower, Pakistan – Jasmine, for example, whatever the participants bring) to be embroidered onto the map, alongside Scotland’s thistle and other wildflowers found in Granton.
The Granton Hub (at Madelvic House, one of the Granton Waterfront heritage sites) have offered space for an art exhibition and display of the completed artwork. Work will also be displayed at the Royston Wardieburn Community Centre.
Tamsin has many years of experience working in the community. She has led many walks in the area, and carried out local history, art, and dance workshops all over Edinburgh over a period of forty years. Her connection with North Edinburgh goes back to the 1980s and she has been living in Granton since 2000.
