Tamsin Grainger, the Granton Nature Map lead artist, has created a backdrop base map on a large piece of material (sourced from the Remode Collective). It has the outline of the Granton coast and local streets on it.
Participants will stitch some nature of their own choice, something that is to be found in Granton or comes from their own background. The subject might be flying, crawling, growing in the earth, or swimming in the sea, such as a seagull, a spider, a thistle or a seal.
This stitching will be on a 4 inches / 10 cms square of fabric. There are different colours of fabric to choose from. Embroidery threads are available in a very wide range of colours for stitching the squares.
You can either pick up materials from a Stitching Circle (see This Week’s Activities) or contact Tamsin to arrange to get some (grantonnaturemap@proton.me) or fill in the contact form on this website and join the WhatsApp group.
Stitching can be done at home or in a group. There is no limit to the number of squares you can make.
The deadline for completed squares is Xmas 2026.
In early 2027 the squares will be assembled and fixed onto the base map. Please let us know if you would like to be part of this process.
The final hanging exhibition will be in February 2027.
