Introduction

We will make the Granton Nature Map together. It will be a stitched map showing flowers and other wildlife that we find here in Granton, and also that we remember from our childhood country or place of origin if that is different. The finished map will be a beautiful representation of our rich and diverse human, plant, animal and insect community. The finished work will hang in the Royston Wardieburn Community Centre and at Granton:Hub (Madelvic House).

There will be a series of Granton walks to find out what is growing at this time. We might take photographs or make sketches.

We aim to make two optional visits to inspire us in our stitching; one to The Palestine Museum and the other to the Granton Art Works where we will view the work of Phoebe Anna Traquair and others who have used threads and embroidery in their work.

Stitching groups will be held in various locations around Granton. Participants can join any group and stitch with others, or come along to find out about the project and take a square and threads home to stitch at their leisure.

The first meeting was at Granton Library on Monday evening 7th September 2026 between 6-7.30pm. The second opportunity to find out about the project and start stitching was Wednesday 9th September at the Granton Community Garden where we enjoyed a delicious free lunch at 1pm, and then sat together, sewed and chatted. We also met on Friday September 25th, 11-12noon at the Granton Castle Walled Garden.

The first walk began at the Granton Community Garden gate at 2pm on Sunday 6th September for a wander around Granton streets and parks, and the second at Wardie Bay on Thursday 24th September 5.30-6.30pm.

You are welcome to join us, whatever your experience. Tamsin Grainger, our lead artist, will be there to help get you started and to teach stitches if needed. There is no age limit and this will be an inclusive group.

All events are free of charge.

Many thanks to Suzanne at Royston Wardieburn Community Centre and Anna at Granton Goes Greener, without whom this project would not have happened.
